BAAC begins short course season

The Buffalo Area Aquatic Club started the USA Swimming short course season with the STAR Super Series Meet No. 1 Oct. 13 at the Burt Flickinger Athletic Center at Erie Community College.

It was the debut swim meet for new head coach Mike Cutler, who recently relocated to Buffalo from Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The team finished third place in the women’s division and fourth place overall. The top point leader was eight-year-old Katarina Umansky of East Amherst with 96 points and four first places: 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke, 50 butterfly and the 100 individual medley.

The second place point leader was 10-year-old Maya Huntress of Snyder with 83 points and three first places: 50 free, 50 back and 50 fly.

Also leading the team with 80 points was 8-year-old Madeline Loeffler of Buffalo with four first places: 25 free, 25 back, 25 fly and 25 breast.

In addition, BAAC had two girls qualify for the Niagara Short Course Championships to be held in Ithaca in March. Lucianna Alessi of Clarence qualified in the 50 free and Lauren Golden of Williamsville qualified in the 50 free, 50 back, 50 fly, 50 breast and the 100 IM.

The BAAC will be competing next in the Tonawanda Titans Halloween Meet Oct. 26-28 at the Town of Tonawanda Aquatics Center.
