Harold C. Box, cancer researcher at Roswell Park


Box Box Harold C. Box, 92, of Williamsville, died Friday, March 30, 2018.

Dr. Box was born in Clarence and attended SS. Peter and Paul School and Neumann High School. He graduated with honors from Canisius College and the University of Buffalo, earning a doctoral degree. He also served in the Navy.

He was dedicated to his cancer research work at Roswell Park for more than 56 years and published numerous scientific papers presented at cancer research conferences around the world. On Feb. 1, 1997, he was awarded the Thomas B. Tomasi Hope Award.

Dr. Box continued to work as a full-time, volunteer cancer researcher at Roswell Park until the age of 86.

He was also active in the St. Vincent de Paul Society for many years, was an avid reader of biographies and history, and enjoyed his backyard flower garden and tending to his bird feeders.

Dr. Box is survived by three children, Gregory and Geoffrey Box and Karen McGowan; one sibling, Dorothy Box; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, June (nee Ruhle); three children, Maureen and Constance Box and Kathleen Krycia; and four siblings, Lavina Steinbrenner, William Box, Marion Regal and Robert Box.

A funeral service was held on April 2 at SS. Peter and Paul Church. Arrangements were made by the Beach-Tuyn Funeral Home Inc. Memorials may be made to the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation, P.O. Box 631, Buffalo, NY 14240.
