Westermeier Martin Dental Care to offer oral cancer screenings

In recognition of April being Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and, as a way to honor former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly, Westermeier Martin Dental Care is providing patients with cancer screenings next week.

To recognize Kelly and his fight against squamous cell carcinoma, Westermeier Martin will offer free oral cancer screenings from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 12, at both of its Western New York offices.

The Amherst office is located at 3500 Sheridan Drive near Millersport Highway. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, nearly 50,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Still, dental professionals say awareness of the disease remains low.

“Many people falsely believe that oral cancer is only associated with smoking and tobacco use,” said Dr. Scott Westermeier, co-founder of Westermeier Martin. “Jim Kelly is a perfect example of the fact that this disease can strike even the healthiest individuals. We stand with our friend Mr. Kelly in his battle against oral cancer and hope that his story will motivate patients to get screened, as early detection is critical.”

During the screening event, patients will be seen on a walk-in basis; no appointment is necessary.
