LIGHTS AND DECORATIONS — About a week ago, I took my time and decorated the outside of the house with icicle lights, illuminated candy canes, a lighted wreath and other holiday themed items.

I am proud of the outcome, as the outdoor timers I set turn the lights on before I arrive home from work, thereby creating a welcoming scene for my wife and me each weeknight.

The Bee is hoping to publish a photograph of an Amherst residence that is tastefully decorated for the holidays.

If you are the owner of such a house or know of a neighbor who has grand decorations, please call me at 204-4917 and let me know the address.

MENORAH LIGHTING — The community is invited to visit the Amherst Municipal Building, 5583 Main St., Williamsville, for the lighting of the menorah at 5 p.m. each day from Tuesday, Dec. 12, through Thursday, Dec. 14, in addition to Tuesday, Dec. 19.

Rabbi Alex Lazarus Klein, Rabbi Adam Scheldt, Cantor Mark Spindler and Rabbi Shmul Shanowitz with Ohr Temimim Jewish Heritage Day School will be officiating at the ceremonies.

Latkes will be had at the third-night lighting ceremony, and jelly doughnuts will be had at the eighth-night lighting ceremony, compliments of Deputy Supervisor Steven Sanders.

UPCOMING MEETING — For parents and caregivers of children with special needs, assistance is available to allow a better understanding to advocate for children’s requirements.

The Williamsville Special Education Parent Teacher Student Association will hold its next presentation from 7 to 8:45 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, in the conference room at the Williamsville Central District Office, 105 Casey Road, East Amherst.

The program, “Family Advocacy in Action,” will be presented by the Parent Network of WNY. There is no fee to attend.

HONORS AND SUBMISSIONS — Our newspaper publishes honor rolls from middle schools and high schools in the town. Each school sends The Bee an electronic version of its honor roll list for publication. We will publish honor rolls as space allows. Also, our deadline for submission of news releases is 5 p.m. on the Friday before each publication. In the town, we have a large number of students named to the honor roll on a consistent basis, and we believe the listings are important parts of our editions.

Although we cannot guarantee a specific date of publication, the honor rolls are a priority and all will be published. For information about submissions, call me at 204-4917.

GET INVOLVED — Are you looking to be involved in your community in 2018?

Consider joining a Town of Amherst board or committee. The full list can be found at www.amherst.ny.us under the heading “Boards and Committees.” If you have any questions, you may call the Council Members’ office at 631-7013, or you can send an email to the council members’ secretary at dcerra@amherst.ny.us.
