East boys cross-country loses close dual meet

Williamsville East’s boys cross-country team lost an extremely close and exciting race at West Seneca East, 28-29, Oct. 3.

“Meets between the two teams are always very close, and this was no different,” East coach Cameron Townsend said.

Joseph D’Amico and Jack Stefanick finished just one second apart to clinch second and third place in 18 minutes. 21 seconds, and 18 minutes, 22 seconds, respectively, chasing some early West Seneca East leaders.

Owen Lewis was East’s next finisher in 19:26.

Townsend said a group of East runners Ben Terhaar, Allen Gelfond, Nicholas D’Amico and Adityananayanan Nair managed to edge ahead of the opposition in some closely contested races in the home stretch as they worked hard as a team knowing the meet was going to be very close.

East boys finished third at Friday’s Town of Amherst Championships at Grover Cleveland Golf Course.

Stefanick finished fourth in a time of 17:04. Joseph D’Amico was ninth in 17:39. Lewis finished in 18:22 followed closely by Aidan Daniels in 18:48 and Nicholas D’Amico in 19:01. Gelfond (19:02) and Terhaar (19:07) rounded up East’s first seven finishers.

Cedric Bone (20:15), Garrett Speller (20:45), Nair (20:46), Gavin MacLean (20:50), Evan Alberti (21:40), Shane Olszewski (21:53), Zachary Gelfond (24:12) and Daniel Purizhansky (24:13) all ran well, with most athletes on the team ending up with a personal best over the 3-mile distance, Townsend said.
