Amherst girls swim team wins back-to-back meets

Lady Tigers set records at Pioneer

Having back-to-back swim meets did not seem to faze Amherst, as the Lady Tigers defeated Cheektowaga, 75-19, Oct. 4 and Pioneer, 64-34, Oct. 5. The wins improved the Lady Tigers to 7-1.

Amherst set three pool records and one school record at Pioneer.

Grace Van Buren broke a 33-year-old pool record in the 200-yard freestyle, winning in 2 minutes, 1.39 seconds.

Paige Smith followed suit by claiming the 500 free pool record in 5:32.94.

In the last event of the evening, the 400 freestyle relay team of Carolyn DeBoth, Paige Smith, Caroline Smith, and Van Buren won in 3:50.75, shattering the pool record by six seconds and breaking an 18-year-old school record.

Van Buren and Paige Smith were double winners. Van Buren also won the 100 free in 55.37, and Paige Smith won the 200 IM in a personal-best 2:22.76.

Carolyn DeBoth won the 50 free in 27.03 and the 100 fly in 1:04.47.

Several personal records were also set, including Lilli Engelhaupt (200 free, 2:14.90, second); Katarina Mueller (200 free, 2:31.26, fifth; 100 breaststroke, 1:30.64); Arianna Stucker (50 free, 31.61; 100 free, 1:23.52); Maggie Parobek (100 free, 1:00.85, third); and Haley Taylor (100 free, 1:07.57).

Caroline Smith won the 100 back in 1:07.22.

Amherst swept all three relays with the 200 medley relay of Caroline Smith, Parobek, DeBoth and Paige Smith (2:00.40); the 200 free relay of Engelhaupt, Parobek, Macayla Todaro and Van Buren (1:51.77); and the 400 free relay of Carolyn DeBoth, Paige Smith, Caroline Smith and Van Buren (3:50.75).

“The team continues to put forth impressive efforts in each of their meets,” Amherst coach Mike Giancarlo said. “Whether it be multiple records, or personal bests, the girls show they are a highly motivated group. They are constantly showing a desire to improve on what they have already accomplished, which is very exciting to see.”

Caroline Smith and Paige Smith were double winners against Cheektowaga.

Caroline Smith won the 50-yard freestyle (personal best 27.63 seconds) and 100-yard backstroke (1:06.90). Paige Smith won the 200 free (2:07.85) and 100 breast (personal-best 1:17.32).

Caroline Smith and Francesca Johnson, both seniors, were also recognized in their final home meet.

Personal records were hit by Lindsay DeBoth (200 free, 2:43.45); Carolyn DeBoth (200 IM, 2:28.50, first); Mueller (200 IM, 2:57.63; 100 free, 1:09.31); Stucker (50 free, 31.86; 100 free, (34.97); Caitlyn Wutz (50 free, 34.92); and Parobek (500 free, first, 6:01.39).

Also winning were Carolyn DeBoth (200 IM, 2:28.50); Johnson (100 fly, 1:15.25); Van Buren (100 free, 55.67); and Parobek (500 free, 6:01.39).

Amherst swept all three relays.

The 200 medley relay of Caroline Smith, Johnson, Carolyn DeBoth and Van Buren won in 2:03.17; the 200 free relay of Johnson, Paige Smith, Parobek and Van Buren won in 1:53.93; and Paige Smith, Carolyn DeBoth, Caroline Smith and Van Buren won in 3:51.29.

Amherst traveled to Sweet Home Tuesday, but information about the meet was unavailable before The Bee went to press.

Amherst wraps up the regular season at 5 p.m. Thursday at Eden.
