Zoning Board action erodes public’s trust

The Amherst Zoning Board of Appeals recently overturned the Town Board’s rezone denial and the people’s super-majority petition at 190 Maple Road.

Members of the ZBA demonstrated either an unfortunate lack of knowledge or a willful disregard of New York State law to accomplish that end.

Some ZBA members have been on that board for years, should know the law, and should have the wisdom to decipher facts from long-winded rhetoric from an attorney and a hired shill.

The Zoning Board of Appeals has rendered irrelevant our elected Town Board, the people’s voices and petitions, protective zoning codes, and any notion of an honest and fair system of governance.

Amherst cannot afford to appoint unfit people to boards with such enormous power that affects so many.

Residents should not have to hire outside legal assistance to remind the people, making important decisions, to simply follow the law.

Are we a town of laws or not? Where is the supervisor and Town Board to make this wrong a right? The buck stops with them.
