Baker to campaign for Town Board seat

Baker Baker Erin Baker will be seeking a four-year term on the Town Board in the fall elections, following the Amherst Republican Committee’s unanimous endorsement of her campaign on March 16.

The seats currently held by Council Members Ramona Popowich and Steven Sanders have terms that end this year. Popowich said she would not seek re-election to a second term, while Sanders will be ending his second consecutive term, which is the limit within town government.

Baker, in a press release, said she intends to “bring fiscal responsibility back to Amherst.”

“By being fiscally responsible, we can maintain the excellent services we’ve come to expect in this town, while ensuring it’s still affordable to live, work and raise a family here,” Baker said in the release. “As a mother, the quality of life in our community is my highest priority, and I have spent nearly my entire career working on behalf of the people of Amherst to help make it the great place we live in today.”

For the past five years, Baker has served as chief of staff to Amherst Assemblyman Ray Walter. Baker oversees the day-to-day operations of the office, assists constituents who have problems with state agencies, and coordinates community outreach events.

The Town Board candidate began her career on Capitol Hill working for former Amherst Rep. Tom Reynolds. Upon Reynolds’ retirement, she was hired to work in the Government Relations Department at Nixon Peabody LLP’s Washington office.

“I have the experience, the drive, and the work ethic necessary to be the taxpayers’ watchdog,” Baker said. “We need to protect our neighborhoods and support our police officers who keep this town safe. We must maintain green space and strategically redevelop aging commercial buildings. We have an obligation to strive towards a better Amherst for all.”

In the release, Baker said she will also be seeking the Conservative, Independence, and Reform Party lines in the election.

Baker lives in Snyder with her husband, Nicholas, and their 2-year-old daughter, Madeline.
