Twin Village Recycling champions crowned at Miller Tennis Center

Miller Tennis Center played host to the Twin Village Recycling $5,000 Thanksgiving Singles Championship Nov. 22-25. It was the final singles event of the Buffalo Tennis Series of 2012.

Champions and finalists in eight divisions captured shares of the $5,000 in total prize money. Additionally, a co-ed junior division produced numerous highly contested matches.

The men’s open championship final featured University at Buffalo teammates Damien David, from Montreal, Canada, and Ivan Vereschaga, from Perm, Russia. In a nearly three-hour marathon, David prevailed, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Other three-set matches included David’s 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 semifinals victory over Alexey Kalinin, a native of Nazerezhnye, Russia, a former UB standout and Miller Tennis Center Teaching Professional, and a quarterfinal duel that saw Kalinin defeat Robert Wesleyan’s Charlie Farres, from Portsmith, England, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Additional men’s championship final results were Nick Bolea over Robert Beer, 6-4, 7-6, in 4.5; Greg Bohneberg over Tim White, 6-1, 7-6, in 4.0; Michael Kessler over Geoff Becker, 6-2, 6-1, in 3.5; and Gordy Sage over Chris Stohl, 6-2, 7-5, in 3.0.

Additional women’s championship final results featured Jennifer Ickowski over Brittany Walters, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1, in 4.5; Amy Chen over Laura Moyer, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, in 4.0; Tami Mecallef over Cheryl Athoe, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3, in 3.5; and Amy Stohl over Rachel Silva, 6-3, 6-1, in women’s 3.0.

In the co-ed 14 and under final, Andrew Searns defeated Courtney Kessler, 6-3, 6-1.

The final doubles and mixed doubles event of the 2012 Buffalo Tennis Series will be held Dec. 28-31 as Miller Tennis Center will host the Sargent and Collins, LLP $5,000 Family Holiday Tennis Championships.
