Spartan wrestlers promote ‘family’ atmosphere

by PATRICK J. NAGY Reporter

Williamsville North’s success on the mat might have been determined even before the season started.

Over the summer, eight members of the team bonded at a wrestling camp at Cornell University.

“I know ‘family’ is thrown around a lot, but I see a different atmosphere than what we have had in the past few years,” North coach Brian Swatland said. “This team is more of a family. They want to compete for each other.”

Leading North’s “family” is senior Jake Zaleski and junior John Freda, who both organized the trip to Cornell.

Zaleski placed fourth in the section last season at 120 pounds and Freda, in his first year of varsity competition, took sixth at 126 and recorded 33 wins.

Swatland is not sure where Zaleski and Freda are going to wrestle this season, but he foresees Zaleski wrestling around 132 and Freda competing around 138.

Swatland said Zaleski and Freda are both capable of being section finalists.

“They are the driving force behind our team,” Swatland said. “How they go will be how we go.”

Swatland said not too many wrestlers can match up with Zaleski’s size, and he is able to get himself out of bad situations in matches.

He said Freda is a great wrestler on his feet.

“He’s the best takedown guy that we have on our team,” Swatland said.

Zaleski and Freda are two of North’s three captains.

Senior Blake Curran is the team’s third captain. He can wrestle from as low as 152 to as high as 170. Curran has been unable to participate at end of season tournaments for the past two years because of sickness and injury.

“He’s an extremely hard worker,” Swatland said. “He’s probably the most disciplined wrestler we have on our team.”

Other seniors in the lineup are Garrett Adelizzio (132), Russ Pusateri (152 or 160, 22 wins last season) and Harshdeep Mander (285).

The rest of the varsity lineup, starting at the lightweights, include freshmen Mac Ferro (99), Josh Waterman (106) and Jamie Camarre (113), junior Steve Roeder (120), sophomore Zac Kelly (126), sophomore Matt Kellner (145 or 152), junior Sasha Savsyuk (145 or 152), junior Nate Mutka (182), sophomore Anthony Bartolotta (195) and sophomores Sean Duggan or Jon McLean (220).

North, 8-5 last season, opened the 2012-13 season with a 43-30 home win over West Seneca West Friday.

North trailed, 18-3, after the first four matches, before Mander received a forfeit at 285. Ferro then accepted a forfeit at 99 and Waterman recorded a pin in the second period at 106.

Roeder won by pin at 120, Kelly won, 7-2, at 126, and Adelizzio won by major decision, 13-5, at 132.

Zaleski and Freda both trailed in their matches but won by 5-4 decisions at 138 and 145. Freda got a reversal with 20 seconds left in his match.

Savsyuk won by pin at 152.

Curran opened the dual with a 7-1 victory at 170.

“West Seneca West is one of the top teams in our division,” Swatland said. “It was a quality win. I felt our conditioning and technical skill was good. We beat their two best wrestlers with our two best wrestlers, Jake Zaleski and John Freda, and that was the difference in the match. We also relied on some new guys like Max Ferrro, Mike Waterman and Steve Roeder, and they won the dual for us.”
