Asa F. McKinnis, math teacher

McKinnis McKinnis Asa F. McKinnis, 84, of Amherst, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012.

Mr. McKinnis was born in Westfield and graduated from Westfield Academy. He served in the Navy from 1945 until 1946.

He later attended Buffalo State Teachers College and the University of Buffalo, receiving his master’s degree in education.

Mr. McKinnis began his career teaching on the Cattaraugus Indian reservation. He also taught sixth-grade math in the Lancaster School District for more than 32 years and served as the principal of Bowmansville Elementary School.

He was a member, usher and church treasurer for Trinity United Methodist Church.

Mr. McKinnis enjoyed hunting and was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Westfield Fish and Game Club.

He is survived by his wife, Esther (nee Olmsted), and one son, John.

Services were held on Thursday, Jan. 19, at Dengler, Roberts, Perna Funeral Home.
