St. Mary’s students to present donation to school

Students at St. Mary’s School will celebrate the success of the Pennies for Peace Project at a school pep rally at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, in the gym. Students will wear their school colors and present a check for $1,555 to the principal, Sister Sheila Anne Burke.

St. Mary’s is located at 6919 Transit Road in East Amherst.

The event is part of Catholic Schools Week, which celebrates the value that Catholic schools add to the community and nation.

Since Dec. 1, students have been collecting loose change to benefit Pennies for Peace, a nonprofit organization that promotes and provides community-based education and literacy programs, especially for girls, in remote mountain regions of Central Asia. Greg Mortensen, author of “Three Cups of Tea,” founded the group.
