Village to feature pumpkin carving, Halloween parade

“Halloween in the Village” will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, and will feature a costume contest, pumpkin carving and other events for children and adults.

Pumpkin carving will be offered at 1 p.m. in Glen Park. Pumpkins, patterns for carving and some cutting implements will be provided, but guests may bring their own supplies.

Seasonal snacks and refreshments will be available, and children attending may wear Halloween costumes. The free event is being presented by the Glen Park Joint Board. Participants are asked to meet at Noll Nature Building on Glen Avenue.

Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., the Williamsville Business Association is sponsoring Treats on Main Street. Participating village merchants will give out candy either between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. or during their normal Saturday business hours.

Treats on Main Street stops can be identified by the orange signs in their windows. Maria MacPeek, chair of Treats on Main Street, estimates that between 25 and 30 businesses will participate.

“We thought it was such a great idea. It gives the kids something to do before the parade starts,” she said.

A costume contest will be held at 5:45 p.m. in the parking lot of Hampton Inn, 5455 Main St. Participants are requested not to park in the hotel’s parking lot.

The contest will be judged by Williamsville business owners. Age groups for the contest will include infants up to 12 months, toddlers from 1 to 4 years, children 5 to 8 years and children 9 to 12 years.

New to this year’s event, the contest will also have an award for Best Family Ensemble.

After the costume judging, a parade will be held at 6 p.m., with a party to follow at Island Park.

The parade, led by the Williamsville Fire Department and Amherst Police Department, will proceed through the back streets of the village to the main pavilion at Island Park.

The party will feature entertainment by The Clumsy Entertainer as well as free cider, doughnuts and candy.

The costume contest and parade are being presented by the Village of Williamsville Youth and Recreation Committee.
