Town, village to hold ceremonies to honor Sept. 11 victims

The Town and Village will be holding several events in remembrance of those who perished in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The following is a list of the events by date.

Wednesday, Sept. 8

The town will hold its annual 9/11 Ceremony of Remembrance at 11:30 a.m. when a memorial walk to the Amherst Memorial Hill Grove will be held.

Anyone participating in the walk is asked to gather at the Ellicott Creek Trailway’s North Forest Road entrance, between West Klein and Maple roads.

The walk will proceed toward the Grove and at 11:55 a.m. a remembrance ceremony will be held.

A living memorial to the victims of Sept. 11, 2001, the grove consists of an American flag, a monument and 120 trees surrounding a bench. Two pathways that traverse the grove form a memorial ribbon.

The ceremony will feature musical performances by the Amherst Senior Center Singers and an appearance by Amherst Police Department Honor Guard.

The names of victims from Western New York will also be read by members of their families.

The Town will provide limited transportation to the grove. Participants may bring lawn chairs for seating. Bleacher seats will be available.

For more information, contact the ceremony’s chairperson, Town Clerk Deborah Bruch Bucki, at 631-7010.

Saturday, Sept. 11 The Amherst Active and Past Chiefs Associations will sponsor a tribute at 9:45 a.m. at the Amherst Town Hall, 5583 Main St., Williamsville.
