Tim Hortons marks 25th anniversary in Amherst

From one restaurant in Buffalo to more than 550 locations in 12 states, Tim Hortons has expanded greatly during its first 25 years of business in the United States.

Tim Hortons opened the doors of its first U.S. location, 1705 Niagara Falls Blvd. in Amherst, in January 1985. Despite near-blizzard conditions, the location received a warm welcome from its Buffalo-area customers.

Today, Tim Hortons operates more than 150 locations in Western New York and employs more than 3,600 people in the region.

“Western New York was the gateway to the U.S. market for Tim Hortons,” said David Clanachan, chief operations officer, U.S. and International, Tim Hortons Inc. “Over the past 25 years, we have continued to evolve our business to meet the ever changing tastes and needs of our customers. We look forward to continuing to serve Western New York as we expand in the United States.”

Currently, there are more than 15 locations in Amherst.

In addition to more than 100 full-service restaurants, Tim Hortons products are available in 82 Tops markets, Coca Cola Field, HSBC Arena and Ralph Wilson Stadium.

Tim Hortons operates more than 3,500 locations worldwide, and serves about 2 billion cups of coffee a year.

To commemorate its success in the market, Tim Hortons has named Western New York “Coffeetown U.S.A.” and has created a Web site for customers to share their Tim Hortons stories: www.coffeetownusa.com.

Tim Hortons believes in giving back to the communities where it operates, including Western New York. Last year, more than 5,600 local youths participated in Timbits Minor Sports programs. Store owners are also involved in a fundraising campaign that will raise $500,000 for Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo through the annual Smile Cookie program.

The company was founded in 1964 by NHL hall-of-famer Tim Horton, who played hockey for the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres until his death in 1974.
