Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital provides room service for meals

Gone are the days when patients receive their meal trays from the hospital's dietary department - with limited choices or delivered while the patient is undergoing tests.

Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital now offers hotel-style room service.

"Hands down, food is one of the most common complaints a patient has about their hospital stay," said Christopher T. Lane, president of Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. "We recognized that good customer service is more than just providing excellent health care - it's also about the amenities a hospital provides and a patient's satisfaction with those amenities."

Patients are now able to order what they want, when they want it from a diet-specific menu. Room service is available to the patient and their guest(s) from 6:30 a.m. to 6: 30 p.m., seven days a week. During that 12-hour period, patients are free to order anything they'd like from their menu, and a hospitality associate delivers their meal within 45 minutes.

"Nationally, the room service approach continues to grow in popularity," said Kristen King, director of Food and Nutrition at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. "Our patients have a variety of choices, everything from omelets, hot sandwiches and pizza to entrée salads, burgers and hearty traditional entrees. We even offer kosher meals."

Suburban's dietary staff works in concert with the clinical staff to take into account a patient's medical needs and how those needs affect eating. For example, once a diabetic patient orders their meal, the diet office will call the nursing station to make them aware of the order. This will allow the nurse plenty of time to test the patient's blood sugar. As an additional safeguard, the hospitality associate will also notify the nurse prior to delivering the tray into the room.

Food service at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital is provided by ARAMARK Corporation.

Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital is nearing completion of its $64 million expansion, which will add more than 100,000 square feet to the hospital and will include an expanded emergency department, 10 operating rooms and approximately 64 additional inpatient beds. Suburban offers services in emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery, urology, otolaryngology, orthopedics, internal medicine, family practice and geriatrics.
