Mary Helen Burke, teacher, executive secretary, volunteer

Mary Helen Burke, 83, of Amherst, formerly of Buffalo, died on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007.

Born in Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs. Burke graduated from Marquette University in 1945.

She was a merchandise buyer at Gimbels Department Store in Wisconsin during the mid 1940s, taught home economics, sewing and marriage at Holy Angels Academy, and also worked as executive secretary for Mt. Clasantis School.

Mrs. Burke volunteered for the needy, managed the gift shop at Sheehan Memorial Hospital, was past president of Seton Guild at Sheehan Memorial, and was a docent at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Howard V., in 1985. She is survived by seven sons, Peter, Paul, Philip, Robert, Joseph, Howard Jr. and Stephen; and four daughters, Jeanne, Josephine, Brigid and Margaret; one brother, Dr. Philip Hessburg; two sisters, Marguerite Fridl and Sister Mary Aloyse; 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held Dec. 29 at St. Benedict Church. Arrangements were made by Amigone Funeral Home Inc.
