SAVE THE DATE — In addition to Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, Feb. 14, and Presidents Day on Feb. 19, another date you may want on your calendar is the annual Love Your Village, Love Your Library gala set for Friday, Feb. 9, at Calvary Episcopal Church, 20 Milton St., Williamsville.

Further details of the event, which benefits the Williamsville Library, are included in the front page news story. The Bee urges the community to attend, as it is a great way to support the village’s library.

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS — Hearts and Hands is seeking volunteers to assist in its mission of connecting individuals in underserved communities to services such as free transportation and help improving the quality of life for those in need of care. According to its members, Hearts and Hands is the largest provider of no-cost escorted senior transportation services in Niagara and Erie counties.

For more information about the organization, visit hnhcares.org or call 406-8311, ext. 110. Further information is available on Hearts and Hands’ Facebook page.

HONORED — The Bee would like to congratulate Tom Tzetzo, who has been involved in coaching Amherst Youth Hockey since 1984, on being named the recipient of the 2018 J. Michael Duffett Memorial Award.

Tzetzo was the 33rd recipient of the honor. The Buffalo Sabres organization presented the award to Tzetzo on Jan. 30.

The honor is presented each year to the coach or administrator whose contributions to amateur hockey in Western New York best exemplify teaching, love of the game and gentle humanity.

FISH FRIES — The annual observance of Lent begins next Wednesday, Feb. 14, and with the season comes the opportunity for many community groups to sponsor fish fries.

This week, The Bee has published a one-time listing of the upcoming fish fries occurring in the town. Groups planning to hold these dinners during Lent are now encouraged to send the information to our advertising department.

Anyone interested in placing a paid advertisement for a fish fry should contact Advertising Sales Director Brenda Denk at 204-4937 or at brendad@beenews.com.

BIG WINNER — The Football Squares contest is now officially over. Congratulations to Kaila Werner of West Seneca, who was the winner of the Big Game Contest. She picked Spar Self Defense, which had the matching square. Kaila won a $100 gift card to Brennan’s Bowery Bar. Watch for more fun contests in the future.

SPECIAL SCREENING — A recent Jolly Boys of Williamsville donation will benefit Erie County Council for the Prevention of Alcohol and Substance Abuse. As part of programs offered by ECCPASA, both organizations are sponsoring a free screening of the documentary “Screenagers” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, in the Amherst Middle School auditorium, 55 Kings Highway.

The screening is recommended for parents and children who are at least 10 years old. An open discussion will follow the documentary.
