Chamber to host health insurance presentation

The Amherst Chamber of Commerce will host a “Save on Your Health Insurance” presentation from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, at the University at Buffalo’s Center for Tomorrow, off Flint Road near Maple Road, Amherst.

According to a press release, the Chamber is encouraging people to meet with the region’s largest health insurance carriers as well as the Chamber’s three staff insurance brokers to ask questions, compare rates and benefits plans, and sign up for 2018 coverage.

Attendees may also find out if they qualify to lock in 2017’s rates for next year.

The release also stated that New York State has approved 2018 health insurance premiums with average rate increases of 13.9 percent for individuals as well as 9.3 percent for small groups.

Chamber officials stress that although the state has released the average increase, officials warn that some may suffer from higher rate hikes.

“Health insurance is a huge cost for individuals and businesses,” Colleen DiPirro, Chamber CEO, said. “It is an important component of the business services the Amherst Chamber offers its members in an effort to increase their prosperity. Our goal with this event is to provide individuals and businesses the opportunity to evaluate what benefits and plans best meet their coverage needs while also considering their budgetary requirements.”

The release further stated that a variety of factors attribute to the dramatic changes in premium costs, such as the uncertainty over efforts to overhaul or replace the Affordable Care Act. It said that to best serve their interests, it is imperative subscribers understand the plans that are being offered and at what cost.

At the presentation, representatives from Blue Cross Blue Shield, Independent Health and Univera Healthcare will be available for questions as well as consultation on plans.

At 2:30 p.m., there will be a brief presentation from each carrier regarding rates and plans that will be offered in 2018 and any relevant information for their clients.

From 3 to 5 p.m., the floor will be open for guests to meet one on one with representatives along with the Amherst Chamber of Commerce’s three licensed insurance brokers to sign up for the best plan.

The free event is open to members and potential members.

According to the release, the Amherst Chamber is the only one in the region to operate a fully licensed in-house health insurance agency, which allows the organization to cut out second-/third-party broker fees.
