Town, county committees issue candidate endorsements

by KEATON T. DEPRIEST Associate Editor

The Amherst Conservative Committee on May 10, following a secret ballot, issued its endorsements in the town’s fall elections.

The party endorsed Marjory Jaeger for town supervisor in addition to Erin Baker Langworthy and Bill Kindel in their campaigns for the two town council seats that have terms expiring at the end of the year. Both council seats carry four-year terms.

Jaeger is currently serving her second term as town clerk. Kindel, a past town clerk and former council member, is also the Amherst Conservative Party chairman, a role he has held since 2011.

The supervisor seat also carries a four-year term. Supervisor Barry Weinstein is completing his second consecutive term and is unable to run for re-election to the post because town law limits elected officials to serving no more than two sequential terms in a particular position.

Also during its meeting, the ACC endorsed Town Justice Kara Buscaglia in her campaign for re-election to a second four-year term.

According to ACC officials, Erie County Legislators Thomas Loughran and Edward R. Rath III, representing the 5th and 6th districts, respectively, attended the meeting to request the committee’s continued support.

Committee officials further said the ACC did not endorse either legislator in their re-election campaigns because the Erie County Conservative Committee is responsible for all of the county’s legislature endorsements. Both legislature seats carry two-year terms.

According to a press release, the Erie County Conservative Party endorsed Guy Marlette, a past Amherst Town Councilman, in his campaign for the County Legislature’s 5th District against Loughran.

In another matter, in April, the Amherst Democratic Committee named its candidate endorsements for the November elections.

Endorsed for supervisor is Brian Kulpa, current mayor of Williamsville. The committee also endorsed Shawn Lavin and Jacqualine Berger for town council. Additionally, the ADC endorsed Buscaglia and Loughran in their campaigns for re-election.

The Amherst Republican Committee is scheduled to issue its campaign endorsements on May 25. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 7.
