John R. Harwood, retired VP of Dunlop Tire
Mr. Harwood was born on Sept. 15, 1930, in Lockport. After attending Williamsville High School, he received a full football scholarship to Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York.
He left school after two years to serve in the Air Force in Korea during the war, but he later returned to Clarkson, where he was the assistant basketball coach, while earning his Bachelor of Science degree in business management.
Mr. Harwood worked for Dunlop Tire and Rubber Corp. in Tonawanda, first as plant manager and eventually vice president of original equipment sales. He retired in January 1995.
In retirement, he spent his winters in Naples, Florida, where he was the president and treasurer of the Tamarand Condo Association.
He also served on the Kennels, Ltd. board of directors for 10 years in Ontario, Canada.
Mr. Harwood is survived by his wife, Marjorie (nee Cronin); eight children, Beth VanEtten, Wendy DelBello, Molly Dwyer, Stacy Giordanno, Roberta Brownell and Daniel, Patrick and Brendan Dwyer; one sibling, Georgia Lee Roberts; and 18 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy (nee Palmer), and three siblings, Robert, William Wilson and Lois Mooney.
The family will be present from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 20, at the Amigone Funeral Home Inc., 5200 Sheridan Drive. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 21, at Amherst Presbyterian Church, 151 S. Youngs Road.
