Photo by David F. Sherman As expected, government downsizing activist Kevin Gaughan filed a petition Wednesday afternoon for a referendum to dissolve the village of Williamsville. Gaughan was accompanied by one of his volunteers, Williamsville resident Jerry Bonvissuto, as he submitted the petition.
“What a great day to celebrate freedom and exercise our rights as Americans,” Gaughan said as he handed over the petition.
The village clerk will now have 10 days to review the signatures for legitimacy. If the petition is found to have the required number of signatures, the village board has 30 days to schedule a referendum on the question. The referendum must take place within 90 days.
Chris Duquin, of the Williamsville Citizens Study Group, states that he agrees that the filing of the petition is a good example of the democratic process at work. Gaughan has promised to hold several community meetings throughout the course of the summer, and Duquin says he welcomes the opportunity to participate.
“We’re looking forward to having a civil conversation this summer that will help all residents make an informed decision,” Duquin said.
