Parents want math textbook out
      According to two district parents, an elementary math textbook in the Amherst Central School District needs to go. Brie Olearczyk and Brian Simonson of 71 Huxley Drive told the board at the Jan. 26 meeting that the second edition of the “Math Investigations” textbook should no longer be used in the elementary schools.

Hasek Heroes raises money for hockey programs
      The second annual Hasek Heroes Backyard Classic raised $1,200 for Hasek’s Heroes, a program that supports hockey in Buffalo. This year’s winners, were “The Champions.” The team included Ian Shorthouse, Chris Marsack, Nolan Sheeran and Jeff McAndrews, all of Amherst.

      An initial 2010-11 budget of $45.8 million, an increase of $2.1 million from the current year, was presented at the Jan. 26 Amherst School Board meeting.

Elimination of backpacks, open campus among safety recommendations for Amherst
      The prohibition of backpacks for all high school students and the elimination of open campus for seniors were among seven recommendations presented to the Amherst School Board on Jan. 26 by Mark Whyle, assistant superintendent for administrative services.

      A team of students from St. Mary’s School has won the Western New York Regional National Engineers Week Future City Competition and will now travel to Washington D.C., to compete in the 18th annual Future City National Finals.
