Regals Bantam Major ‘AA’ win tournament

The Buffalo Regals Bantam Major “AA” won the Ace Bailey Memorial Tournament held Dec. 10-13 in Stoney Creek, Ont.

The Regals were off to a rough start earlier in the tournament, but they never gave up. In the semifinal and championship games, they faced teams that had beaten them earlier in the tournament.

The Regals beat the Kingston Cougars, 2-1, in the championship. Mitchell Yoder (Amherst) and Brian Theuerkauf (Lancaster) scored goals for the Regals. Dom Goosman-Ielase (Lancaster) recorded the win in net.

The Regals blanked the Elmvale Coyotes, 5-0.

Single tallies by Michael Blachowski (Lancaster), Michael Burke (West Seneca), Jason Pawlak (Cheektowaga) and two goals for Theuerkauf scored for the Regals. Chris Reinhardt (Cheektowaga) secured the shutout.

Led by goals from Tyler Utz (Williamsville), Joe Bengart (Clarence), Yoder and Theuerkauf, the Regals beat the Merritoon Bulldogs, 4-1, in the first round.

Goosman-Ielase recorded the win in goal.

In addition, the team got solid forward play from Lauton Rushford (Amherst), Kyler Friol (Cheektowaga), Patrick Gates (Lancaster) and Brandon Bueme (Lancaster) and solid defense by Tim Englert (Clarence) and Ryan Higgins (Amherst).

Trevor Berninger (Williamsville) also contributed to secure the championship.
