North routs OP, remains undefeated in ECIC I

Williamsville North closed out 2009 with a perfect record in league wrestling matches.

The Spartans beat Orchard Park, 51-12, last Wednesday at home to improve to 4-0 in ECIC I and 8-6 overall.

“With five freshmen in the lineup, we’re doing OK,” said North coach Brian Swatland. “We ’re winning the ones we have to. Our best wrestlers are coming through with pins and wins where we need them.”

Wrestlers who scored pins for the Spartans were: Mike Pitz (119, 3:04), Austin Berube (130, 3:23; improved to 14-0), Stephen Liebler (152, 47 seconds), Brady Scanlon (171, 1:15), Matt Killion (215, 3:45) and Javier Mejia (285, 3:04).

Other North victories came from Jake Zelaski (103, 6-4), Nick Christiano (112, major decision, 8-0), Russ Pusateri (125, forfeit), Mackie Gage (135, 2-0) and Paul Carbrey (140, forfeit).

John Ring lost, 3-2, at 145. John Strohmeier fell, 7-2, at 160. Craig Petit was pinned in 2:20 at 189.

North returns to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, when they host Jamestown before competing Jan. 8-9 in the 29th annual Niagara Frontier Wrestling Officials Association Tournament.

Sweet Home

The Panthers dropped an ECIC I home match last Wednesday to Lancaster, 44-15.

Sweet Home won five of the 13 matches but had to forfeit two weight classes.

Senior Zach Fumerelle improved to 10-0 with an 18-3 technical fall at 140. Senior Gage Bateman won, 8-3, at 145, to 9-1. Senior Daiquann Burney won, 12-6, at 125. Freshman J.J. Marin won, 6-5, at 160.

Senior Alex Dennis beat Daniel Kubiak, 8-4, at 215. Kubiak took fourth in Section VI last year.

Sweet Home’s home match last Friday with Akron was moved to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Sweet Home hosted Hamburg Tuesday, but the result was unavailable before The Bee went to press. Sweet Home hosts the Joe Shifflet Sweet Home Invitational Dec. 29-30.
