.I am a divorced mother of three and recently had to apply for unemployment benefits as well as Belmont Shelter housing (also known as Section 8). I’ve been looked at like a piece of garbage by numerous people while I’ve been trying to get an apartment and/or use food stamps. God forbid it should ever happen to them or their children. Hopefully, people won’t treat them as disrespectfully as they’ve treated myself and my children. I don’t expect to be on this forever, and I don’t receive financial support from welf a re .

.I thought your editorial regarding the one-party system in Albany as a failure was excellent. We can take all of that a step further and take it to Washington, too. Good job; I’m so glad I read this, and I hope a lot of other people read it. We need a lot of education among our citizenry to realize what is going on in our country, state and community.

.New York State is in a severe fiscal situation with tax revenues declining and budget deficits projected to be in the billions of dollars. State aid and other revenue to Amherst will decline significantly, impacting both current and future town budgets. Tax increases are not an option. Now is the time to offer union employees a choice of salary reductions in lieu of future layoffs.

.To the person who commented about the snow day on Dec. 10, it’s more than just plowed streets that allow children to get to school in a safe manner. What about the weather elements? It was frigid with 50-mph wind gusts. That’s why superintendents closed schools, not because of the amount of snowfall.

.Attention all dog walkers: yes, it’s cold; yes, it’s snowing; and yes, it gets dark earlier, but you still have to pick up after your dog. There is no winter moratorium. Now if we can only get the town to enforce sidewalk shoveling rules, we’ll be all set.

.Congratulations to the students, music faculty and school district for the most wonderful concert, Winterfest 25, held Dec. 15-16 at Williamsville East High School. It was a magnificent concert involving some 500 music and art students in the production in the evening. It goes to prove that the Williamsville School District and the music department and faculty are just tremendous folks and that the students are a very talented group. Thank you for a wonderful evening; keep up the good work.

.Wow, great idea, Amherst Bee, in your last-minute holiday gift ideas. I didn’t know you could purchase discount Regal movie tickets, Delta Sonic coupons with Applebee’s and even Visa gift cards. Very impressive.
