Teens have a place to go in Amherst

I'd like to respond to Shai-Lee and Tatiana's letters regarding places for teens to go (April 8). While I can't offer Shai-Lee increased public transportation, I'd like to draw attention to a relatively unknown teen hangout, Melissa's Coffee House.

Started by a group of local high school students in 2006, Melissa's features local band shows at least twice monthly and hopes to be open more hours with the increased involvement of teens. The refreshments are really cheap, there's a pool table and satellite TV, the location near Sheridan and Mill is within walking distance for many teens, and the staff is really dedicated to finding out what teens want and making it happen.

Yes, Tatiana, Amherst needs a teen club, and through the Amherst Youth Foundation, one got started. With more help from ambitious teens and, yes, the support of parents, Melissa's could be just the place teens are looking for. Find Melissa's Coffee House on Facebook and MySpace, and call 633-6773 for more information. Caitlin Pitz AmeriCorps Volunteer in Service to America
