Scrabble Fest promotes literacy awareness Don Lawrence, president of Rotary Club of Amherst East, hosted the third annual Scrabble Fest at his house on Feb. 15 in an effort to raise awareness about literacy. The mission — literacy volunteers change lives, word by word — was supported, letter by letter, by Rotary members as they competed in the event. The Scrabble Fest held at the Lawrence house was planned in conjunction with Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo and WNY. Don and Miriam Lawrence hosted 18 East Rotary members and friends in order to raise funds to strengthen literacy in the area. The fest included three highly competitive games of Scrabble, Don said. The top point earners were Ken Redding, Judy Redding, Iris Weinstein and John Yurtchuk. Other recognition was also given to John Huber and George Oliver. John Hurld and Weinstein will represent the club at the area final to be held at the Karpeles Manuscript Museum in Buffalo on March 7. The Scrabble Fest hosted by the Lawrence family was one of 40 tournaments that have been held or will be held in the Buffalo area in February.
