North ends East's tournament win streak
Girls basketball
      Since the Williamsville East Holiday Tournament began five years ago, only the Lady Flames have taken home first-place honors. Not this year. Williamsville North out-scored Williamsville East, 16-11, in the fourth quarter to win, 38-34, in the tournament final played on Dec. 30 at Williamsville East.

Nor th's defense overpowers South in Jolly Boys final
      Williamsville North has a knack for winning regular-season boys basketball tournaments and the trend continued last week. The Spartans won its ninth consecutive regular season basketball tournament after downing Williamsville South, 81-62, in the final of the Williamsville Jolly Boys Basketball Holiday Tournament on Dec. 30 at Williamsville South.

Tigers play with passion, lose to GI in boys hoops final
      The Amherst Central boys basketball team did not win its holiday tournament, but Tigers' coach Mike Chatelle was pleased with the effort he got from his players. The Tigers beat Niagara Catholic, 82-50, in the first round on Dec. 29 and lost in the final to Grand Island, 64-48, on Dec. 30. Both games were played at Amherst High School.

Flames spend holiday recess in Florida
      The Williamsville East boys basketball team had a holiday recess to remember. The Flames competed in the KSA Holiday Tournament from Dec. 27 to Dec. 30 at the Jostens Center located on Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in the Walt Disney World resort in Orlando, Fla. The team left Buffalo on Dec. 26 and returned on Jan. 1.

Amherst resident helps Tour Excitement finish second at national tourney
      Pat Smith from Amherst, Shane Irwin from West Seneca, Zac Zaepfel from Newfane and David Campuzano from Grand Island — all from Buffalo In-line Hockey Group — played major roles in leading Tour Excitement to a second-place finish at the Winternationals recently held in Old Bethpage, N.Y. Winternationals is a national in-line hockey tournament.

Sweet Home downs O'Hara in Ken-Ton final
      The Sweet Home boys basketball team avenged two losses and a fourth-place finish at last year's Ken-Ton Holiday Classic with two victories and a first-place trophy in last week's installment. The Panthers blew out Kenmore East, 73-49, in first-round action on Dec. 29 and downed Cardinal O'Hara, 75-59, in the final on Dec. 30. Both games were played at Kenmore West.

Lady Panthers can't finish off opponents
      The Sweet Home girls basketball team took away some valuable lessons from the Gates-Chili Tournament held Dec. 29-30 in Gates-Chili. The Lady Panthers lost games to Rochester teams, Gates-Chili, 69-58, and Edison Tech, 52-49, but coach Matt LaRoach said he is frustrated because he believed his team could have won both contests.

Amherst battles, loses to Jamestown
      Amherst Central played tough against one of Western New York's finest girls basketball teams but came up short in their bid to win their own tournament. Jamestown, ranked third among Western New York small schools, used a 19-3 run in the second quarter to help them to a 66-53 win over Amherst in the final of the Amherst Holiday Tournament on Dec. 30 at Amherst.

UB Amherst Swimming closes the year strong
      UB Amherst Swimming, a partner of STAR Swimming, concluded 2008 by dominating the Niagara District 14 and Under IMX Team Championship Meet. Twenty-six swimmers combined for nearly 100 lifetime bests.

North indoor track teams improve times
      It was a personal-best kind of meet for the Williamsville North girls and boys indoor track teams on Sunday at Fredonia State College. Williamsville North girls Senior Amy Loud placed third in the 55-meter dash and qualified for the Section VI Championships in a personal-best time of 7.85 fully automated time.

      The Sacred Heart girls basketball team has won in many ways this season, including an ugly 49-41 victory over Frontier in the final of the Xpress Classic tournament on Dec. 30 at Fredonia High School. The Sharks led, 25-13, at halftime, but did not play well on offense.

Yale gets by Princeton
Amherst Girls Development League
      It was a tight girls hockey game on Sunday, with Yale edging Princeton, 3-2. Princeton opened the scoring with an end-to-end goal from Nell Meosky, who put it by Yale's MacKenzie Pautler. Yale's Emily Keable took a pass from Miranda Podlas to get it past Princeton's Theresa Meosky.

      Williamsville North's Western New York High School Club hockey large school team defeated Kenmore East/West, 6-0, on Dec. 29 in the Spartans' highest scoring outburst of the season. David Tyczynski (Cam Sroda, Michael Austin) started the scoring in the first period followed by Chad Loughran (John Murphy) and Austin Huesner (Tyczynski).

      Williamsville East's wrestling team placed second out of 14 schools and crowned four champions at the 41st Akron Holiday Varsity Tournament on Dec. 30 at Akron High School. The Flames scored 134 total points following first-place West Seneca East with 164.

Despite low numbers, Panthers excels at Akron
      With only eight wrestlers competing in the Akron Invitational Tournament, Sweet Home coach Jeff Hess was surprised more than anybody with his team's fourth-place finish out of 14 teams. "I knew the kids would do well, but to take fourth with only eight kids was impressive," said Hess.

      Amherst Central's James Sidell placed fourth at 285 pounds at the eighth annual Maryvale Invitational on Dec. 30 at Maryvale High School. After a first-round bye and second-round pinfall loss, Sidell pinned Billy Gee of Niagara Falls in 1:41 and Eric Hurlburt of West Seneca West in 25 seconds, before losing by pin 37 seconds to Jordan Sisti of St.

      Luke Falzone and Mike Lang led the Williamsville South wrestling team to a ninth-place finish out of 14 schools at the 41st Akron Holiday Varsity Tournament on Dec. 30 at Akron High School. Falzone was pinned in 3:41 by Matt Callari of Williamsville East in the 125-pound final. Lang beat Peter Stritzinger, 6-4, to win third place at 171.

Spartans win Frederick J. Puff Memorial swim meet
      Williamsville North had always been invited to the Frederick J. Puff Memorial swim meet but for one reason or another, had never been able to attend. This year, Spartans coach Dan McLaughlin made it a point for the team to compete, and he's glad he did. The Spartans won the eight-team meet on Saturday at Cleveland Hill High School with a total score of 226.

South girls bowling begins season strong
      So far so good for the Williamsville South girls bowling team this season. The Lady Billies are 2-0 in ECIC Division II matches and placed sixth out of 20 teams at the Festival of Lights Tournament on Dec. 30 at Thruway Lanes. Williamsville South totaled 4,919 pins.

      The second annual John Cavagnaro Fund Memorial Skate-A-Thon will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Amherst Pepsi Center. The event is being sponsored by the Amherst Knights Major Midget hockey team. Sabertooth will be making a guest appearance.

      For more than a decade, athletes looking to build up their skills for the fall football season have looked to a program that's a little different. The Ultimate Football League, which will begin its 11th season this weekend at Sweet Home High School, combines aspects of basketball and football to prepare players during the winter offseason.

      The Mite Blackhawks started the New Year in fine fashion with a hard fought 3-1 win against the Bruins on Sunday. Umair Syed scored his first goal of the season to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead. Adam Pohrte put the team up two with a goal midway through.

      The Mite Red Wings beat the White Sabres, 4-3, on Dec. 28. The Red Wings' Sammy Latorre opened the scoring with an assist from Daniel Krasinski. Krasinski and Carson Graves also scored in the first period. Jack Manka had an assist.

Micron Black Sabres have offensive explosion
      The Micron Black Sabres emerged victorious over the speedy Gold Sabres, 8-3, on Dec. 27 behind the offensive explosion of Ryan Stark, Mathew Orlowski and Corin Trejchel. Goalie Abby Ruggiero anchored the defense with impressive stick and pad saves, and Lucas Wapnewski and Kyle Shiring led by example with relentless backchecking to break up odd-man rushes.

Gray Sabres defeat Black Sabres
      The Micron Black Sabres scored five hard-fought goals in a 9-5 loss to the Gray Sabres on Sunday. Adrian Wittmer, Ryan Stark and Matthew Orlowski provided the offense. Brayden Edman and Lucas Wapniewski frequently started the rush up ice. In his goaltending debut, Dillon McClary aggressively challenged shooters one-on-one.

The eighth-graders took an early 9-1 lead despite aggressive defensive play by seventh-graders Amy Trabert, Sarah Parish, Tracy Nasr, and Tricia Andrews.

      Christ the King's seventh-grade varsity girls basketball team won, 40-10, against Park School on Dec. 18. Leading scorers for CTK were Emilee Foster with 12 points and Ellen Uba and Antonia Hall with nine points each. Kelly Griebner and Natalie Ryan scored four points each and Sydney Bucholtz added two.

      In the first ever cross-town game, Northwestern of Amherst Youth Basketball's fifth-sixth-grade girls beat Cheektowaga, 28-13, on Saturday. The regulation court and running clock did not seem to affect Northwestern, who was efficient with their offense.

      After a sluggish start, the Amherst Squirt Major "AA" hockey team posted another league win with a 3-1 victory over Erie on Sunday. Erie opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by Barrett Hoffman but it was all Amherst after that.

Knights Bantam Minor 'AA' earn shutout
      The Amherst Bantam Minor "AA" hockey team won their 11th league game, beating Brockport on home ice, 14-0, on Sunday. The Knights' scoring came from all lines. Goalie Joe Picone tallied the shutout. The other Knights' goalie, Tony Thomas, played forward and recorded a goal and assist.

      The Squirt Penguins fought back from many deficits throughout the game to win, 7-6, over the Predators. Trailing, 6-5, with nine minutes remaining, Tyler Walsh (Taylor Camelo) scored his first of the year. Ben Bryan (Mark Venditti) then scored a clutch goal to scrape out a win.
