Andrews in the running for SI's 'Kid of the Year'

Derek Andrews
Derek Andrews, a third-grader at Harris Hill Elementary, has been selected as a Top 10 finalist in the Sports Illustrated for Kids "Kid of the Year" contest.

Andrews beat out approximately 5,500 other entrants to be selected as a finalist. The criterion was based upon how well Andrews does in school, community service and athletics.

People can vote to move Andrews past the first round, through Sunday, Sept. 21, by logging on to www.sikids.com.

Andrews plays Amherst youth hockey (house and select), Clarence house baseball, Clarence travel 8U baseball and Clarence soccer and takes gymnastics at Greater Buffalo Gymnastics.

Andrews is currently under treatment for an undiagnosed muscle disorder that has required him to undergo physical therapy three to four times a week to maintain muscle strength. Doctors to this point have not been able to identify what is causing him to lose muscle strength and continue to run tests.

Andrews recently won the Bank of Akron essay contest titled "What I Would do with a Million Dollars." His essay detailed a number of projects he would do, including putting on a magic show for kids at Women and Children's Hospital, providing books for Buffalo schools and helping out the elephants at the Buffalo Zoo.

Andrews used his prize winnings from the contest (interest on a million dollars for one day — approximately $64), along with the help of the Bank of Akron and David Adams Card World, to make his essay come to life. He was able to put on a magic show at the hospital and pass out WebKinz that he purchased with his prize money and Beanie Babies donated from David Adams Card World. Andrews also helped with a book drive at Harris Hill Elementary that benefited a Buffalo school by organizing, loading and delivering books to the Buffalo school.

To help the elephants at the zoo, Andrews purchased food items such as bread, cereal and watermelons as a welcome home gift for the elephants that had just returned home from the Columbus Zoo in Ohio.
