Nicholas and Joey Bartelo of Williamsville, students at Community Music School, recently won awards at a competition. Nicholas tied to win a 2008 Ruth A. Marcy Performance Award in the 8- to 11-year-old category, and Joey tied to win the 12- to 14-year-old category. They study with Shirley Chan at the school.

Hope for Tomorrow Foundation recently volunteered in Juliaca, Peru, assisting 20 children in need of cleft lip and palate surgeries. Volunteers taking part were registered nurse Jan Vosburgh, volunteer Nan Gallivan, plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey Meilman and anesthesiologist Dr. John Huebschmann, as well as Dr. Kenneth Anthone, who donated cataract surgery, and Dr. Charles Rice, who donated wound care.

The Ladies Auxiliary VFW of the Amherst Township Post No. 416 recently elected officers for 2008-09: President Marie Killian, Senior Vice President Dorothy Merrill, Junior Vice President Alison Mohr, Secretary Norma Schwarzott, Treasurer Joyce McDaniels, Chaplain Florence Taube, Conductress Helen Reid, Guard Tina Beraducci, Patriotic Instructor Elaine Miller, Historian Carol Camillo, and trustees Isabelle Kramer, Joanne Sterns and Joanne Fenter. The post will honor Killian as the past president on July 8 at the Italian Village Restaurant, 804 Wehrle Drive. She is recognized for her work and help in the winning of several state awards.
