UB breaks ground on projects

Out with the old, and in with the new. The University at Buffalo's North Campus broke ground on two major development projects this past week.

Bulldozers demolished 20 year old trailers that had housed graduate students in the UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The Engineering Trailer Complex has sat between Ketter and Jarvis halls.

Ten trailers were demolished following the ceremonial "crash" by Harvey G. Stenger, dean of UB engineering on a bulldozer. The demolition of the trailers make way for a new engineering building, the first new engineering building constructed in two decades.

The anticipated groundbreaking for the new building is spring 2009. It will modernize programs and facilities for the departments of computer science and engineering and electrical engineering.

On the same day, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the expansion of the Child Care Center. The $7 million project also includes renovations to the center. The Center's South Campus site on Bailey Avenue will also be renovated.

When work on both sides is completed, in fall 2009, more than 75 additional slots will be available for children of UB faculty, staff and students.
