Youths invited to take Summer Reading Challenge

Just because school is out doesn't mean students have to stop learning - or reading. Studies have shown that children who continue to read during the summer perform better in school in the fall.

Assemblyman Jim Hayes, R-Amherst, encourages area children in kindergarten through sixth grade to find out by taking part in his 2008 Summer Reading Challenge.

Students must read together with their parents or another adult at least 15 minutes per day for at least 40 days during the summer. Those who meet the challenge will be honored by Hayes in September at a special ceremony, where they will receive a New York State Assembly Excellence in Reading certificate.

Designed to promote literacy and lifelong learning, this year's program features the theme "Catch the Reading Bug" for 2008.

To participate, request a program brochure from Hayes' district office at 634-1895 or hayesj@assembly. state.ny.us or e-mail hayesj@assembly. state.ny.us. The brochure includes a calendar to keep track of daily reading and a list of book suggestions for various grade levels.
