Webb earns softball honors

Williamsville South graduate and Amherst native Dana Webb has been selected to the 2008 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team.

Webb was also a first-team selection a year ago. She will now be placed on the national ballot for All-American voting.

Webb was also selected to the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference First Team.

Webb plays second base for the Edinboro University softball team.

Webb moved up to the first team after landing a spot on the second team a year ago. She led the Fighting Scots in numerous offensive categories, including batting average (.342), hits (40), runs (22), doubles (five), triples (six), home runs (eight) and RBIs (31).

With a home run in her final game of the season, she not only tied the season record for home runs, set a year ago by Danielle Arno, but also broke the career home run record with 16.

The 31 RBIs ranks third in a season and puts her in second place in the career records with 76. The six triples are tied for third in a season, and the 40 hits are tied for ninth.

This marked the third straight year that Webb hit over .300. She posted a .333 average as a freshman and a .344 average as a sophomore. In addition, she once again enjoyed an outstanding season on the field, committing just three errors in 140 chances, a .979 fielding percentage.

It marked the second year in a row she made just three errors. She made just one error over her final 26 games.

Other South grads faring well in college are Dana Carter and Michelle Fridey.

Carter helped secure the University at Buffalo softball team's 3-1 victory over Central Michigan on May 4.

Carter, a Williamsville South graduate and Williamsville resident, roped her first career home run in the bottom of the fifth, a towering two-run shot over the center field fence to help secure the win.

In addition, it was also Carter who put the ball in play to ink the game-winning RBI in the Bulls' walk-off, come-from-behind 7-6 victory in game two.

Carter finished the day 4 for 6 with four RBIs.

Fridey was named to the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Second Team.

Fridey led the Canisius College softball team with a team-high 37 RBIs. In her first year as a Griff, the sophomore catcher/designated player hit .331 with a team-leading 12 doubles.

Canisius, the MAAC champions, face Arizona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at noon at Hofstra University in the Hempstead Regional.
