Williamsville North placed a few more bricks in the boys lacrosse program's foundation in their 7-6 win over Frontier last Friday at North.
Joe Greenwald tied the game up with an outstanding individual effort and set up Dan Rychlicki for the game-winning goal. Greenwald finished with two goals and one assist. Rychlicki scored two goals.
"Dan has been a true gamer for us this year and his potential is unlimited," said North coach Matt Smart.
Smart said Steve Brannen played outstanding defense on one of Frontier's top offensive players late in the game to help secure the win.
Brian Jaszka tallied twice. Nick Hereth scored once.
Pat Stasio had a solid game in goal and played a complete game, said Smart.
Smart said Grant Rickan did a wonderful job at the faceoff X and played tremendous defense.
"Our guys stepped up and took care of business," Smart said. "Coach Mike Cicco and coach John Stalker did a great job on game day and our guys benefited. I really was proud to see two former Spartans on the sidelines giving back to the program and having fun doing it."
As an added bonus, North's modified and JV programs also beat Frontier on Friday.
North had three days to prepare for Frontier after a horrible 10-2 loss at home to Clarence on Monday, May 5.
"We couldn't control the ball or the faceoff," said Smart. "Our defense played well but too much time on defense equaled making poor decisions on offense. We didn't shoot enough and when we did, it was to the goalie's stick or chest. We need to make the goalies move and force them to make saves instead of making them look good. Clarence wanted it more than we did. We eliminated them last year in playoffs and they came to our place to make a statement and we let them."
Jaszka and Kurtis Knoble scored for the Spartans.
A day after the Frontier game, North fell at Canisius, 11-3, on Saturday.
"I think we didn't mentally prepare well for Saturday's game," said Smart. Smart thought his team played well in the first half and then shut down in the second.
"Canisius beat us off ball offensively everywhere on the field and exploited our lack of focus," said Smart.
"We didn't do a good job at seeing our man and the ball. We also struggled to compete for the faceoffs and in turn, didn't have as much possession as we would have liked to."
Smart said his team's offense in the first half was great fueled by Craig Petit's two goals and assist.
"He really stepped up on Saturday," said Smart. "Dan Rychlicki was unable to play and Craig stepped into his position and did wonderful. We have some solid sophomores on offense that are learning that they need to take the lead when others don't. Each game has to be a learning experience in order for us to be fully successful."
Aaron Dindurksi also scored for North.
North beat Lockport, 15-5 on Monday.
"We came out hungry, played with emotion and finished strong," said Smart. "Every part of our team was working. We won the ground ball battles and finished our opportunities on offense. Grant Rickan was a machine at the faceoff 'X' and in picking up ground balls and getting them upfield. Defensively, we didn't let them threaten the goal for 75 percent of the game."
Hereth had four goals and one assist to lead North. Petit scored three goals and one assist. Greenwald scored three times.
Jaszka had two goals and two assists. Knoble had a goal and assist, Rychlicki and Jon Benamoz each scored a goal. Rickan posted an assist.
North plays Penn-Yann at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Alfred University.
"This game is critical to our development and confidence," said Smart. "We have to come out firing on all cylinders again and play our game. We need to keep the gas peddle down for the remainder of the season."
North hosts Jamestown at 5 p.m. on Thursday and travel to North Tonawanda at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 19.
