East baseball shut out in doubleheader

The Williamsville East baseball team journeyed to Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday to play a double header against the Lakewood Raiders.

The Flames lost, 1-0 and 2-0, to fall to 4-9 overall.

East's Dave Mernan and Lakewood's Matt Kenney each threw a five-hitter as both teams struggled at bat on the artificial turf.

The winning run was scored in the third inning, as Lakewood center fielder Mike Vagi singled in third baseman Mike Harrington from second for the winning run.

East missed a chance in the fifth to tie it on Gary Styn's single when Sean Ricketts was thrown out at home plate on a perfect throw.

In the second game, Lakewood's Ed Michaels threw a one-hitter. East's only hit was Andrew Steele's bunt single in the first inning. Michaels faced only 22 batters, one over the minimum, as the Raiders turned a double play in the seventh.

Lakewood recorded eight hits with Harrington leading the way with two.

East lost to Sweet Home, 13-5, last Thursday at East, to fall to 3-5 in ECIC Division II.

Sweet Home's Cody Stonish picked up the win and also had a single, double and a two-run home run in the second. He scored three times and five RBIs.

Casey Kacz, Travis Denman, Aaron Klein and Mike Wolcott each had two hits for Sweet Home as they banged out 13 hits.

The Flames managed 10 hits. Austin Barnett had two singles and a double for three RBIs. Steel had two hits.

East was outhit last Tuesday, 11-10, at Amherst in an 11-7 nonleague loss.

Amherst southpaw Brandon Jeffords picked up the win on the mound for the Tigers. He also chipped in two hits. Alex Dusenberry led the Tigers with three hits. Derek Duke had two hits.

Dan Tyx paced the Flames with two doubles and two singles for three RBIs. Gary Styn and Nick Weigel each had a single and double for East.

East played at Hamburg on Monday. They hosted Williamsville North on Tuesday, Williamsville South at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, travel to Iroquois at 5 p.m. on Friday and host Orchard Park at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 19.

Sweet Home

Besides its win over East, the Panthers (3-6, 5-9) lost home games to Canisius, 6-5, and Iroquois, 11-1, last Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Phillip Stewart cracked a two-RBI triple to score Cody Stonish and Bryan Price in the bottom of the fifth to give Sweet Home a 5-4 lead against Canisius but the Crusaders tied the game in the sixth and scored the go-ahead run in the seventh.

Brian Barnas allowed three earned runs but pitched well and gave the team a chance to win, said Sweet Home coach Derek Zgoda. The Panthers only mustered four hits.

Iroquois' Matt Jimenez limited the Panthers to four hits. He also struck out six batters and walked two more.

Travis Denman reached on an error and scored on a Ryan Gutt RBI single in the second.
