'Israel at 60 - A Celebration of Culture' planned This month marks the 60th anniversary of Israel's independence. One of the largest local events celebrating the anniversary will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Temple Beth Am, 4660 Sheridan Drive. The event, "Israel at 60 - A Celebration of Culture," will include music and dance, art and literature, and food. There will be an opportunity to view Israeli art that isn't on display at any gallery or museum. Members of the community are loaning the temple works by Israeli artists that are seen only in private homes. In addition, a gallery will display works for sale by two Israeli artists, Eli Ran and Smadar Livne. The family-friendly event will also feature a children's art studio, where youths will be able to create their own copies of the artworks on display. There will also be live performances of Israeli music and dance, storytelling and poetry reading, and a bazaar of items made in Israel or by Israeli artists. Also, a cafe will serve Israeli cuisine. A giant map will pinpoint where former Western New Yorkers or relatives live in Israel, and a video will show highlights of residents' journeys to Israel. Admission is free. For information, call the temple at 633-8877. |
