James McHenry's goal with 3:45 remaining in regulation lifted the Sweet Home boys lacrosse team to an 8-7 win over Williamsville East last Wednesday at East.
McHenry finished with three goals.
The score was tied at 2-2 after the first quarter but Sweet Home took a 5-3 lead at halftime.
East coach Ed Greenway said his team did not take advantage of man-up situations and it cost them the game.
Zach Stubbendeck, Derek Frost, and Ryan Newell each scored twice. Mike Faltisco also scored. Blake Dougherty recorded three assists. Peter Duggan and Jay Winzenried each added a helper.
Ryan Sheehan made 16 saves for East. Pat McMahon recorded 17 saves for Sweet Home.
"Pat was the difference," said Sweet Home coach John Faller. "Down the stretch, he made some good saves."
Chris Covel, Sweet Home's second returning scorer, fractured a growth plate in his right ankle and could be out for as much as three weeks. They lost their returning leading scorer Colin Cardinale to a knee injury earlier in the season.
All of the other games East and Sweet Home played last week were victories. The Flames routed Lake Shore, 16-2, last Friday at Lake Shore, and beat West Seneca West, 8-2, on Saturday at East.
Sweet Home downed Nichols, 8-3, on Friday at Sweet Home.
East took a 6-0 lead on Lake Shore after the first quarter and never looked back. Frost finished with four goals and two assists. Faltisco had two goals and four assists. Austin Weil added two goals and three assists.
Sheehan also scored, marking the first time in the 22 years Greenway has coached at East that a goalie has accomplished the feat.
"It's very rare but it happens," said Greenway. "He took the ball in the crease, wove in and out down the field, nobody slid to him and by the time somebody did, he had gotten off a good shot and beat their goalie on the stick side."
East took a 5-1 into halftime against West Seneca West and the defense of Rashaun Durden, Josh Roetzer, Ryan Dobos, Brian Wallden, Justin Barkowski and Winzenried held the Indians in check.
Peter Duggan had three goals and an assist to lead the Flames' offense. Frost chipped in a goal and assist, Faltisco scored twice and Winzenried and Stubbendeck each scored once.
Sheehan made seven saves.
East (4-2, 1-1) played at Grand Island on Tuesday but the result was unavailable before The Bee went to press. They welcome Hamburg at 5 p.m. on Thursday at East.
"To win these two games would be a huge confidence builder as we move towards the second half of the season," said Greenway,
The Sweet Home midfield line of McHenry, Nick Cavalieri and Taylor Heald each scored twice against Nichols. Cavalieri also recorded two assists.
Donnie Daniels and Eric Danheiser each posted a goal.
McMahon made eight saves.
Sweet Home (5-2, 1-0) hosted Hamburg but the result was unavailable before The Bee went to press. They travel to Lake Shore at 5 p.m. on Thursday and host Section V Victor at 4 p.m. on Saturday and Amherst at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 5.
