Brush collection starts May 19; Compost Facility open

The Town of Amherst's annual spring brush pickup will begin on May 19. Please have brush, logs and stumps out for pickup by this date.

The town will collect large piles of logs, brush and tree stumps only. All material must be placed out at the start of that week. No mixed piles containing lumber, concrete, railroad ties or nonorganic materials will be collected.

Leaves, small trimmings and other yard waste should be put in containers, paper yard-waste bags or bundled for collection by Waste Management only on a weekly basis. The Highway Department will not pick up these materials during this spring brush pickup.

On another cleanup note, residents are reminded that the Town of Amherst Compost Facility at 560 Smith Road is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Beginning May 3 it will be open on Saturdays during the same hours.

"Now that the warm weather has arrived, it is a great time for residents to keep the Compost Facility in mind as they are making plans to tackle spring cleanup and gardening projects," Council Member Guy Marlette said.

The Compost Facility has two types of compost, screened and unscreened, and two types of wood mulch as well as compost/soil blend. Also available are Amearth fertilizer pellets.
