Bee Healthy Basket auction to benefit Aspire's Center for Learning Aspire will hold its 10th annual basket auction, with all proceeds going to help children with disabilities. The event, which will begin at noon on Saturday, May 3, will boast more than 100 theme baskets donated by employees, area businesses and friends of Aspire. Tickets for the event are $5 for 25. The event will be held at and will benefit Aspire's Center for Learning, located at 4635 Union Road, Cheektowaga. Aspire of Western New York - formerly the United Cerebral Palsy Association - is a comprehensive provider of programs and services for adults and children with developmental disabilities including, but not limited to, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, epilepsy, autism, traumatic brain injury and other neurological impairments. The agency employs more than 1,500 people in locations throughout Western New York. For more information, visit www. aspirewny. org. The Center for Learning provides a wide range of programs and services to children with disabilities and their families, from the earliest possible diagnosis through age 21. Occupational, physical and speech therapy, vision, health and education services are provided as related services or part of a comprehensive program. All services are delivered in a team approach. Naturopathic medicine takes the stage at Gilda's Club WNY Gilda's Club of Western New York wants all cancer sufferers, friends and families to know that the organization is there for them in their times of need. To help them in that mission, there will be an "Ask the Expert" event from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 5, at Gilda's Club Western New York, 1140 Delaware Ave., Buffalo. Dr. Maria Cronin Herod, a practitioner of naturopathic medicine, will be the speaker. Held in conjunction with Naturopathic Medicine Week, Herod will speak about naturopathy as a complement to standard cancer treatment, providing information on nutrition, cleansing and all that is new in the field of naturopathy. Gilda's Club of Western New York is part of a worldwide organization dedicated to being the best place for individuals and families touched by cancer to receive support and care. They are free to join. Kidney Foundation holds class on chronic disease Chronic kidney disease is a debilitating, life-threatening condition that can cause many problems. The National Kidney Foundation of Western New York will hold a chronic kidney disease management class titled "Take Control of Kidney Disease through Knowledge," at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the National Kidney Foundation, 300 Delaware Ave., Suite 101, Buffalo. The program is for individuals who have been diagnosed in the early stages of kidney disease, and is taught by a registered dietician, who offers basic information about kidney function and chronic kidney disease. Other topics covered include high blood pressure and hypertension associated with kidney problems, slowing the progression of kidney disease, maintaining a healthy attitude and nutrition and diet guidelines. The class will cost $35 and is covered by the majority of Independent Health, Univera, and BlueCross BlueShield medical plans. For more information or to register, call 835-1323. |
