School issues addressed at summit

Carol A. Kostyniak of Amherst attended the White House Summit on Inner-City Children and Faith-Based Schools in Washington, D.C. on April 24.

She is the secretary for Catholic education for the Diocese of Buffalo.

"This is an excellent opportunity for our diocese to understand what is happening across the country and to establish a network to share issues and potential solutions for the challenges facing Catholic schools," Kostyniak said before the summit.

President George W. Bush has said he is concerned with the decline of Catholic schools, and the summit was held to impress upon Congress the need to develop reasonable legislation and practical solutions to save schools and the students. The group discussed the challenges the schools face and explored solutions.
