Smelts so good!

Lewiston never smelt so good as during during the Smelt Festival this weekend.

It's time again for smelt dipping and this year, smelt lovers can enjoy two days instead of one, beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, May 2 at the foot of Center Street along the Lewiston Waterfront, and on Saturday, May 3 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Silo Restaurant.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation deemed Lewiston as one of the best places in the country for smelt dipping. Smelt, which features a distinctive cucumber aroma when plucked from the water, are one of the few fish that sportsmen are allowed to net.

Beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, the Niagara River Anglers will batter and fry up 300 hundred pounds of free smelt. On Saturday night, the Silo Restaurant will cook up an additional 200 pounds of free smelt.

Also featured during the festival will be chowder, beer, a variety of picnic foods for sale, music with Carl Filbert on Friday and Barbed Wired on Saturday.
