Take this job and shove it

Are you tired of being nickel and dimed to death? So is Subversive Theatre, as they present "Nickel and Dimed," a play on (not) getting by in America, through May 10.

"Nickel and Dimed," by Joan Holden and adapted from Barbara Ehrenreich's award-winning book, is for anyone who ever hated their boss, their job or the struggle for the almighty dollar.

It follows the real-life experiences of a progressive journalist who goes undercover as a low-income worker to learn first-hand about the plight of America's working poor. Working five different unbearable jobs in three different parts of the country, she endures the litany of annoying customers, flaky co-workers and bosses that make living paycheck-to-paycheck as degrading as possible.

Sometimes funny, sometimes appalling, but always inspiring, "Nickel and Dimed" is a deeply touching play that boldly reveals many of the hideous inequalities that fester just under the surface of modern-day America.

Directed by Virginia Brannon, the cast features Moira Keenan, Kelly M. Beuth, Paul O'Hern, Jennifer Fitzery, Arianna Boykins, Jennifer Linch, Leon S. Copeland Jr., Jessica Stuber, Afrim Gjonbalaj, Stephanie Dale and Tom Izard.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with no performance Thursday, May 1, and continues through Saturday, May 10 at the Alt Theatre, 255 Great Arrow Ave., on the third floor of North Buffalo's Great Arrow Building, just off Elmwood Avenue between Amherst Street and Hertel Avenue.

In keeping with the anti-corporate philosophy of the play, admission is free with donations gratefully accepted before, during and after each performance.
