Hasan breaks heptathlon record, qualifies for NCAAs

Alyissa Hasan
Williamsville South graduate and Notre Dame University junior Alyissa Hasan won the California Invitational Heptathlon on April 17 at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif., with an NCAA automatic qualifying and school-record 5,509 points, a personal record by 773 points.

Hasan, who was the first-day leader with 3,443 points, used a 2:25.83 personal record in the 800-meters to punch her ticket for the NCAAs in Des Moines, Iowa, in June.

Hasan led after the first four events of competition with 3,443 points. She won the 100-meter hurdles (13.82) out of the gate and used strong performances in the high jump (5-8.5, tied for first), shot put (40-9.75, second) and 200 meters (25.45, second) to cruise out to a commanding lead. She also took second in the long jump with a leap of 5.96 meters and threw the javelin 30.33 meters.

The total of 5,509 points also puts her on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials B list.
