East softball wins ECIC II opener

Williamsville East won its first ECIC Division II softball game of the season by defeating Sweet Home, 4-2, on Monday, April 21 at Transit Middle School.

Pitcher Karen Kingsley went the distance, scattering three hits.

Sweet Home scored a run in the second inning. Jesse Lewandowski singled up the middle. Meg Land hit a ground ball to third base and was safe due to a throwing error. The outfield backup throw got by the infield and Lewandowski scored.

Natalie Vazquez led off the third with a deep home run to left center field to give the Lady Panthers a 2-0 lead.

East rallied in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Bridget Steele and Ally Kotz walked and Taylor Klun singled home Steele. Chelsea Horne singled in Kotz, putting runners at second and third. Designated runner Anna Stolzenburg, running for Klun, scored from third on a passed ball, to give East a one-run lead.

In the fourth, East's Jessica Windnagle reached base on a fielding error, was sacrificed to second by Courtney Hawkins and scored after Kingsley ripped a triple down the third base line.

Kingsley gave up only one more hit after the third inning home run, facing 13 batters, one over the minimum. It was Kingsley's second win with no losses this season.

East lost to West Seneca East, 3-2, in early April after jumping ahead, 2-0. East came back a couple of days later, defeating Williamsville North, 4-2. Both games were non-leaguers.

East (2-1, 1-0) hosts Lake Shore and Tonawanda on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, at 4:30 p.m. at Transit Middle School. They play at 5 p.m. on Friday at Hamburg.
