Always traditionally strong in the sprinting and hurdling events, Williamsville South girls outdoor track coach Sam Hasan feels his team has more balance than it's had in a while.
"We're not just a sprint or hurdles team anymore but more well-rounded," said Hasan. "I never tried to be one dimensional but we have had a lot of success in the past in the sprints and hurdles. Now we have some younger kids that have done mid-distance events for a year now and it's starting to kick in for them."
The Lady Billies are led by tri-captains Allie Van Buren, Amanda Breymeier and Colleen Hurtubise.
VanBuren, a sophomore, is the reigning Section VI outdoor champion in the 100-meter hurdles and should be a favorite again in the event this spring. VanBuren also won section titles in the 55-hurdles over the last two indoor track seasons. Van Buren also came in fourth in the 200 at outdoor sectionals last year.
VanBuren will also be a threat in the 100 dash, 400, 4x400 and 4x100 relays and pole vault.
Breymeier is strong in the 100 and 400 hurdles, 200, open 400, high jump, long jump, and 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Breymeier is a two-time state qualifier in indoor track in the high jump.
Hurtubise is strong in the 800, 1500, 3000 and 4x800 relay.
Other returning athletes include senior Jennifer Lopez (shot put, triple jump, discus); juniors Cassiana Hyppolite (open 100, 200; 400 hurdles) and Laura Johnston (800, 1500, 3000); sophomores Jenny Mooney (800, 1500, 4x800 relay, possibly 4x400 relay), Meagan Munroe (800, 1500, 3000) Ellie Falletta (open 100, 200, probably 4x100) and Mary Catherine Aungst (400, 800, 4x800, 4x400, possibly 1500).
Newcomers who should contribute are senior Kristina Arcury (100, 100 hurdles); junior Katie Falletta (mid distance); freshman Bethany Syracuse (100 hurdles, 400 hurdles, open 100, 200, 400) and eighth-graders Kailyn Arcury (open 100, 200, high jump, pole vault, 4x100 relay, hurdles) and Charlie Falletta (open 100, 200, possibly 4x100 relay and pole vault)
South finished 3-2 in ECIC III last year. A team goal is to win the division title, something they haven't done since 2006.
"It's going to be competitive," said Hasan. "Anything can happen. It will depend on how we perform when it counts."
"I'm excited," he added. "The girls have been working so hard since practice started. I can't wait to see how they do against other teams."
