St. Mary's School math team wins St. Joe's competition

The St. Mary's School in Swormville team won the grand prize trophy as the highest scoring team of all schools participating in the St. Joseph Collegiate Institute's Brother Edward Martin Math Contest on April 1. Team members were Lauren Barry, Jacob Dittenhauser, Marc Ruszaj, Elizabeth Principe, Maggie Steele, Sean Cadden, Daniel Maher, Therese Mastrandrea, Christopher Schiappa and Kristin Zucarelli.
Students from St. Mary's School in Swormville won the grand prize trophy in the St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute Brother Edward Martin Math Contest for seventh-graders on April 1.

The annual contest is open to seventh-graders in private and public schools in Buffalo and the surrounding area.

Students take a written math test to be scored immediately for awards in several categories. The group of students from St. Mary's won the grand prize trophy as the highest-scoring team of all schools, public and private, that participated in the competition.

Team members were Lauren Barry, Jacob Dittenhauser, Marc Ruszaj, Elizabeth Principe, Maggie Steele, Sean Cadden, Daniel Maher, Therese Mastrandrea, Christopher Schiappa and Kristin Zucarelli.

In addition, Zucarelli also placed second, and Schiappa, third, in the division for smaller nonpublic schools. Cadden, Maher, Mastrandrea, Principe and Steele won honorable mention trophies. Math Club moderator is Mary Stefano, the school's accelerated math teacher. Stefano worked with the students after school in preparation for the contest and several other competitions. She has had teams compete in the event for several years.
