Sports briefs Amherst resident and Sacred Heart Academy graduate Lindsay Macaluso was named to the All-University Athletic Association softball second team for the UAA Championships recently held in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Macaluso had a .263 average (5 of 19) with two runs scored, one double, and three RBIs for the University of Rochester. The Yellowjackets posted a 6-2 record at the tournament and finished in second place. Williamsville North graduate Katie Lyons scored once in the Buffalo State College women's lacrosse team's 12-11 triple overtime win over Christopher Newport on March 24. East Amherst resident and Williamsville North graduate Jenna Frieling was named the State University of New York Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week. Frieling, an exceptional education major, posted a 2-1 record in five appearances for the Bengals. She registered 14 strikeouts and had a 0.86 ERA in 24 innings of work, including a three-hitter in an 8-2 win against Indiana Tech. East Amherst native and University of Rochester freshman Dan Francis was named to the University Athletic Association All-Association First Team after the conclusion of the recently held UAA Championship Baseball Tournament in Sanford, Fla. Francis had a .375 batting average (9 for 24) for Rochester, which went 3-3 in the tournament. Francis scored a team-high 10 runs and drove in seven others, and he was also perfect in three stolen base attempts. The Amherst Women's Senior Golf League will tee off between 8:30 and 8:45 a.m. on Friday, May 22 at Oakwood Golf Course, 3575 Tonawanda Creek Road The league is currently accepting new members. Amherst Central graduate and Amherst resident Liz Reid batted .409 with a team-high four doubles and 10 runs batted in the Hamilton College softball team's spring trip to Florida. Reid led Hamilton with 13 assists from the field. Hamilton won five of seven non-conference games on the trip. The Hilbert College athletic department recently announced the dates for its 2008 boys' and girls' summer basketball camps. All sessions will run Sunday through Thursday and campers will have the option of staying overnight (resident camper) or commuting (day camper). The girls' camps will be held from June 29-July 3 and from July 13-17, while the boys camps run from July 6-10 and July 20-24. The third annual Olmsted Open 18-hole golf tournament will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23 at Delaware Park Meadows Golf Course, 84 Parkside Ave. and Delaware Park Ring Road, Buffalo. The tournament will have a shotgun start and be in a scramble format. The cost is $90 per golfer. Zach Anderson of Williamsville East picked up the win on the mound in the University at Buffalo baseball team's 4-3, 10-inning win over Central Michigan on Saturday. Anderson pitched the final four innings and allowed no runs and four hits. |
