Bee Healthy Dr. John Glick of the Patch Adams Gesundheit Institute will be the featured speaker at this year's Patient Education Day at Buffalo General Hospital. The presentation will run from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 20 in the hospital auditorium, 100 High St., Buffalo. Glick is no ordinary doctor, much like the man with whom he practices, Dr. Patch Adams. Adams was portrayed by Robin Williams in a movie about the doctor's life. His entertaining presentation will be geared toward revealing the healing powers of humor and music in the fight against kidney disease, heart disease and diabetes. A graduate of the College of William and Mary, Glick has practiced medicine for the last 25 years, using an integrated approach to patient care. The majority of his work is done with people who suffer chronic pain, depression and loneliness. In addition to his physician duties, Glick is also a writer, clown, photographer, acupuncturist, bird watcher and father. Participants will take home tools and tips to help lift their spirits. There is a $5 charge to attend the event, which includes parking and refreshments. For more information, call the National Kidney Foundation at 835-1323. Health Information Privacy week answers technology questions In today's world, security is important. There are too many predators out there just waiting to suck up all the information they can, especially when it pertains to health care. That's why the American Health Information Management Association is sponsoring its annual Health Information Privacy and Security Week, April 13-19. The goal of the week is to raise public awareness about issues related to the privacy and security of health information. The theme for this year's event is, "Confidential Is Essential - Protect Health Information." While the health care industry's steady evolution toward electronic health information management systems has significant benefits, there is also a need for health care consumers to address the risks associated with technology and take an active role in monitoring the privacy and security of their health information. The health information management professionals at Trocaire College can provide educational assistance on the protection and confidentiality of personal health information. Consumer rights are also detailed in the Notice of Privacy Practices that each provider or health plan is required to provide to consumers at the time of service or upon request. Read the notices to not only understand your rights but also to learn what type of information is maintained and how it is used. For detailed information on consumer privacy rights, visit myPHR.com.
