School News Kenneth Huff, a teacher at Mill Middle School, was awarded a Toyota TAPESTRY grant of $10,000 for excellence and innovation in science education. The grant is administered by Toyota and the National Science Teachers Association. Only two teachers out of 50 in the United States received the prestigious award on March 27 at the NSTA National Conference on Science Education in Boston, Mass. Under Huff's direction, students will study the physical properties of snow and the characteristics that contribute to crystalline formation. Amherst Middle School was named the winner of the Muscular Dystrophy Association's shamrock contest. During February and March, the school competed against schools in Western New York to sell cutout shamrocks to help raise money for MDA. They raised $2,641 and won a dance sponsored by Kiss 98.5. This was the first year Amherst Middle School participated in the contest. Ebaa M. Abdelfadeel, a student at Sweet Home High School, has been awarded a National Achievement $2,500 scholarship, supported by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the scholarship program. More than 140,000 students entered the 2008 National Achievement Scholarship Competition, and 800 were chosen. Abdelfadeel plans to study chemistry. |
